Yuma Kokohead is the main protagonist of Master Detective Archives: Rain Code.
He is a supposed detective trainee of the World Detective Organization who was granted permission to investigate Kanai Ward by himself of the aforementioned name, and his talent is supposedly cooking. Specifically, he came to Kanai Ward alongside other Master Detectives to solve Kanai Ward's Ultimate Secret. However, he is in truth the organization's leader, Number One, and the old man giving orders for the detectives to investigate the city is actually a body double he personally hired. Number One had the death god Shinigami possess him to conceal his Forensic Forte: Coalescence, allowing him to enter Kanai Ward under the alternate identity of "Yuma Kokohead", the real trainee who has that name. He is enemies with his evil homunculus, the culprit of the Great Global Mystery, and the CEO of Amaterasu Corporation, Makoto Kagutsuchi, who he turns out to have actually been a mere pawn for the corrupt CEO to use in a bigger scheme.
He is voiced by Katsumi Fukuhara in the Japanese version and Lucien Dodge in the English version.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- As the leader of the World Detective Organization, he is the most influential character in the story and is the one who provides the detectives that he works with the motivation to investigate Kanai Ward's mysteries. Even Halara Nightmare and Yakou Furio, two detectives who are overly cynical and trust nobody, are shown to idolize him while unaware he's right there before them.
- He is shown to be the most morally good character in the game - if not retroactively counting Makoto Kagutsuchi's turn to villainy - as he willingly helps others without asking for anything in return and is the only protagonist to openly defy the Amaterasu Corporation with the desire to rid them of their corruption and eventually make its CEO reform and clean up the company, which also makes him responsible for Kanai Ward's betterment in the game's epilogue.
- His DNA was used by the Unified Government to create Amaterasu Corporation CEO Makoto Kagutsuchi, who carried across Number One's personality - including his unwillingness to work with anyone except himself, which is what drives the game's conflict.
- He's considered to have "the world's greatest mind." As Makoto Kagutsuchi is his clone and is shown to be a successful manipulator, this claim is no exaggeration, and also proves that Number One is capable of thinking the same way, though it's not clear that this is the case at first.
- In spite of his questionable actions throughout the game (like making a pact with a death god, erasing his memories, taking another detective's identity, resigning from his position as leader, and using it as a means to defeat Makoto), this was the only way Number One could counter the machinations of his clone as said clone planned to kill him off via the Mystery Labyrinth and replace him.
- Despite Makoto being his evil clone, Number One's virtues still apply to him as Makoto is an anti-villain who sincerely seems to empathize with Kanai Ward's citizens and the fact that Kanai Ward's residents and himself were unwillingly created as homunculi for petty personal gain under orders from the Unified Government and Yomi Hellsmile, showing that Number One's morality is somehow still retained even when a clone of him has turned to villainy and making it evident how strong his morals really are. Granted, not even Number One himself considers these values an excuse for his clone's sheer heinousness.
- While Fubuki Clockford could qualify alongside him due to her time-rewinding abilities (which exceed beyond that of Number One's Coalescence due to her ability to reverse spacetime itself rather than copy an ability), influence over the world's standard time, lack of Number One's questionable extremist acts as part of his scheme to counter Makoto, and the lack of potential corrupting qualities that could turn her evil like Number One's clone did (in the form of Makoto), she is nowhere near as intelligent or influential over the events of the main story and her lineage is somewhat of a background detail for her character.
