Yami Yugi (real name Atem) is one of the main protagonists of the original Yu-Gi-Oh! series (alongside his reincarnation, Yugi Muto). He is the ancient spirit of a dead pharaoh who was sealed in the Millennium Puzzle until Yugi Muto solved it and he began to reside in his body, often taking possession of it during duels or when he and his friends are in danger.
In the first anime, he was voiced by Megumi Ogata. In the second anime, he was voiced by Shunsuke Kazama in the Japanese version and Dan Green in the English version.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- He and his incarnation, Yugi Muto, are the two most admirable characters in the series as they defeated many dangerous villains including Pegasus, Dartz, and Yami Bakura. Yami Yugi stands out for being in control in most of their duels.
- He has a strong influence as he's responsible for Yugi Muto becoming the powerful duelist he is and he sealed his soul and a portion of Zorc's into the Millennium Puzzle which would later be found by Yugi's Grandpa and given to Yugi.
- He is the most powerful duelist in the series as he not only has the Millennium Puzzle, but also the three Egyptian God cards. He rarely loses duels and even those are not legitimate losses (the exception being Rafael, who he'd eventually defeat in another duel).
- He softens his rivalry with Kaiba, as in the Waking The Dragons arc, he's visibly distraught to see Dartz defeat him and vows to avenge Kaiba's defeat.
- He is shown to be exceptionally intelligent and skilled as he and Yugi Muto always find ways to defeat duelists, such as employing a Mind Shuffle tactic on Pegasus to prevent him from using his Millennium Eye to see what cards he was playing, or creating an infinite loop causing Marik to deck out and lose. He was also the first to realize Johnson was cheating during his duel with Joey by rigging every dice roll and coin toss in his favor.
- He defeated Zorc Necrophades by learning his own true name, allowing him to revive the Egyptian God cards and merge them together, creating Holactie the Creator of Light. Shortly later, with Yugi's help, Yami Yugi went back home.
