Van Hohenheim is the overarching protagonist of the manga series Fullmetal Alchemist and its 2009 anime adaptation Brotherhood.

He is an alchemist and a living Philosopher's Stone who shares a tragic past and connection with Father, the main antagonist of the series. He is the husband of the late Trisha Elric and the estranged father of Edward and Alphonse Elric.

Actions and Characteristics[]

  • He is the most powerful hero in the entire series. After unwittingly gaining half of the souls of people in Xerxes Transmutation Circle made by his former friend Father, he is granted immortality and immense alchemistry skills, being the only one who can directly confront with Father himself.
  • He is one of the most admirable heroes in the series, as he is the one who ultimately undid Father's nationwide transmutation circle, saving the lives of 50 million people in Amestris.
  • He is one the most influential heroes in the series. After knowing Father's plan of using the massive circle to sacrifice the entire Amestris, he spends years preparing his own transmutation circle to undo the nationwide transmutation. He also traveled to Xing and taught people of Xing alchemy, shaping their culture and allowing them to create their own branch of alchemy. He is also responsible for nurturing lots of heroes, most notably his two son, Edward and Alphonse into the heroes they are.
  • He is one of the most noble heroes in the series, holding a compassionate and pacifistic nature towards everyone. After knowing the people in Xerxes are sacrificed, he talked with the souls of 536,329 people trapped inside him, spending countless time talking to each one of them to help them overcome their madness. He is sincerely remorseful about abandoning his family, apologizing to them and begs them for forgiveness. Even after everything Father has done, he still attempts to settle things peacefully with Father.
