Philemon is one of the two overarching protagonists of Atlus's Persona series (alongside Igor).
He is the personification of hope within humanity and often acts as a guide to oversee the enlightenment of humanity. He is often depicted as a young man wearing a butterfly mask but appears in later games only in the guise of a butterfly.
He is voiced by Kenyu Horiuchi in Japanese and Travis Willingham in English.
Actions and Characteristics[]
- As the personification of the creative hope of humanity and the Creator of the Velvet Room, Philemon is undoubtedly the most influential character in the entire series as he serves as a guiding force or mentor for the protagonists of the other games particularly in Revelations: Persona and Persona 2, coupled with his actions inspiring the Velvet Room's inhabitants including its master Igor. In that regard, Philemon's influence led to the heroic deeds of the Persona users through the Velvet Room.
- He is the most defensive and admirable character as he works to guide humanity towards enlightment and of the Persona users fighting against omnicidal and tyrannical gods. In Persona 2, it is revealed he made a bet with Nyarlathotep, the Ultimate Evil of the series, on whether humanity can be enlightened or destroyed. In fact, he was responsible for guiding Tatsuya Suou back to reality from the Other World and the eventual defeat of Nyarlathotep, saving the Earth and all of humanity.
- Being the series' equivalent to God, he is the most powerful being in existence as he can grant Personas, shapeshift, and make the imaginations of mankind into reality putting him in opposition to Nyarlathotep (the equivalent to Satan). And as a deity, he has access to greater power.
