Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is a gift. That is why it is called the present.
~ Oogway, motivating Po to keep going after his bad day with the Furious Five and Shifu.

Oogway is the overarching protagonist of the Kung Fu Panda franchise. He is a wise old turtle known for being the one to create Kung Fu, and was the previous protector of China for hundreds of years. After he was past his prime, he trained multiple heroes into becoming Kung Fu masters such as Master Shifu so China could continue having people to protect them, eventually creating the prophecy known as the Dragon Warrior, who was said to be the one who would become Oogway's successor and save the Valley of Peace from Tai Lung, with Oogway choosing Po as the Dragon Warrior, believing the universe sent him a sign that Po was the chosen one and after Po successfully saved his panda kind from Kai the Collector, Oogway crowned him as his official successor and disconnected himself from the real world permanently, leaving Po and the rest of the heroes to defend China after his passing.

He was voiced by Randall Duk Kim.

Actions and Characteristics[]

  • He has an extremely high level of influence over the entire franchise, with him being the reason for almost every major event to transpire thanks to him creating the Kung Fu fighting style, creating the Jade Palace, training Shifu into becoming the Kung Fu master and mentor he is in the first three films, training Master Thundering Rhino, Master Ox and Master Croc into being noble heroes that protected China from threats, forming the Furious Five by masterminding a plan to have Tigress band with four other fighters to defend a raid on the Valley of Peace, founding the prophecy of the Dragon Warrior, and being the Greater-Scope Paragon over the first and third entries due to him convincing Shifu that Po was the true Dragon Warrior and that he should train him to defeat Tai Lung and him sending a message to Po's father, Li Shan so that Po could learn Chi and save the pandas from being massacred by Kai, officially crowning Po as his successor in the end of the third entry.
  • He is extremely intelligent. Being a wise old turtle who was the one to invent Kung Fu, train Shifu into becoming the wise master he is, as well is instilling prophecies onto others that both helped them, as well as predicting future events, such as Tai Lung's escape. He also was a very skilled long-term planner, being able to come up with complex plans such as letting Kai defeat him and allowing him to escape the spirit realm after sending a message to Li Shan that Po needed to learn Chi in order to defeat Kai permanently, so that Kai could finally be killed off and once Po had completed the deed, Oogway would consider him his true successor and grant him the Hero's Chi, both indirectly erasing Kai from existence and making Po even stronger in the process.
  • He is one of the series most admirable characters, saving the Valley of Peace from Ke-Pa's demon army and sealing him in a mortal body in order to strip him of his powers, which prevented his omnicidal goals for centuries, saving the pandas from being killed by Kai who wanted to absorb their chi, training Shifu, Master Ox, Master Croc and Thundering Rhino into becoming Kung Fu masters and noble heroes, saving the Valley of Peace from many threats, being responsible for the formation of the Furious Five, being responsible for molding Po into becoming the Dragon Warrior and playing a posthumous role in Kai's permanent defeat.
  • He is shown to be rather powerful, with him not only being an extremely skilled Kung Fu master who is the reason the skill exists in the first place, he was also able to incapacitate the ferocious Tai Lung in the matter of seconds, something that was shown to be near impossible later on. He is also one of the few characters in the series that possesses superpowers thanks to him originally possessing the Hero's Chi, which grants the user superhuman strength, stamina, speed, durability, the ability to fly and shoot blasts of Chi which are strong enough to kill even the nearly invincible Ke-Pa in a single strike.
  • While he is enough of a baddie to qualify as a Magnificent Baddie, this isn't the core focus of his character, with the narrative instead focusing on his noble deeds and the positive impact he has on the heroes, with his admirable acts often outshining his baddie acts.
    • This is without mentioning the fact that his acts, while lethal, do not pass the baseline for heinousness anyway.
  • As the protector of China before his death, he embodied the concept of peace and justice and brought hope to the citizens after ending Ke-Pa's reign of terror over the Valley of Peace where he continued to protect for hundreds of years before his eventual passing and he remained a very wise mentor to all of his students who he preached to that accidents don't exist and everything has a reason for occurring, making him symbolic in the process.
