The Ultimate Good of Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a psychological apocalyptic anime produced by Studio Gainax that serves as the deconstruction of the Mecha genre. It was released in October 1995 and is considered to be one the greatest anime series of all time. It's themes of depression and maturity have inspired many shows over the years and it has later become a franchise spawning multiple games and movies, along with merchandise. In a post-apocaplytic world where there are numerous heroes, none are as admirable or noble as Kaworu Nagisa. To learn more about him: read his page.

Plot[]

In the distant future of the year 2015, there was a global cataclysm called the Second Impact, which nearly wiped out humanity and turned the world into a post-apocalyptic world. Mentally and emotionally disturbed teenage Shinji Ikari is called to the futuristic city of Tokyo-3 by hid estranged and cold father Gendo to pilot a biogenetically engineered mech called Eva-01 to help defend the world from the Angels who seek to initiate Third Impact, with the help of the other arriving pilots with the brash Asuka Langley Soryu and the quiet Rei Ayanami. It also showcases Shinji's psychology and his daily interactions with his close ones and also the life of his wacky but broken-hearted legal guardian Major Misato Katsuragi. As the show progresses, the secret conspiracies surrounding NERV and Second Impact are slowly revealed as Shinji's mental health starts to slowly decline.

Close Contenders for the Ultimate Good[]

Shinji

Shinji Ikari[]

The main protagonist of the series, Shinji obviously has a ton of influence due to being its main character. He is also one of its most admirable characters as he saved the world from numerous Angels and helped Kaworu Nagisa in his suicide which saved all of humanity. He's also very noble as he helped reach out to Rei Ayanami, which caused her to revolt against Gendo and gave him access to Human Instrumentality and resulted in him rejecting it and bringing all of humanity back to what it used to be and stopping SEELE's agenda for godhood.

However, despite being incredibly influential and admirable, he is too inconsistent for the title as he is an anti-hero who suffers from self-esteem issues and has committed many heinous actions like sexually assaulting Asuka while in a coma and starting Third Impact out of his own existential angst.

Rei

Rei Ayanami[]

For being one of the main characters, Rei Ayanami also has a lot of influence on the plot due to being one of the main characters and like Shinji Ikari has helped save the world from Angels and is the one who helped save humanity from the Angels and turned against Gendo Ikari to help reverse Third Impact saving all of humanity from being destroyed and bringing it all back.

However, like Shinji Ikari, she is too inconsistent for the title as she obviously helps cause Shinji Ikari's most heinous actions of causing Third Impact.

Yui Ikari

Yui Ikari[]

The overarching protagonist of the anime series and the mother of Shinji Ikari and the husband of Gendo, Yui is the catalyst of the events of the entire show. The daughter of a prominent SEELE member and a brilliant star student who has many accomplishments in her field of bioengineering, Yui would lead the "Artificial Evolution Laboratory" where she headed the research on the Evangelion project and caused the creation of the Evangelions, making her responsible for the heroic actions they would commit along with the main protagonists. Having been aware of SEELE's plans of causing Third Impact to gain Human Instrumentality, she had formed a plot of subverting the goals of Gendo and SEELE that she did by causing her soul to be part of EVA-01 and while resolving Human Instrumentality to return all of humanity to its prime state. She also is very kindhearted and brave as she encourages her son to choose his own path in securing his future and protected him numerous times while in EVA-01, which resulted in him bringing back all of humanity. She's also mildly symbolic as she embodies goodness and hope at its core.

However, her intentions are way too morally ambiguous, as because of her joining the Evangelion Unit by merging her soul with it has caused lots of harm in the series and her intentions also make her a extremist due to how she actually caused Third Impact.
