NOTE: This only covers the events of the series up to Side:Hope of Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School, as Danganronpa V3: Killing Harmony is set in a different continuity than the main series.

I'm going to keep moving forward, with hope in my heart.
~ Makoto Naegi

Makoto Naegi is the main protagonist of the Hope's Peak Series of the Danganronpa franchise. He was an ordinary high school student who got selected through his good luck to be part of Hope's Peak Academy Class 78. However, Class 78 was trapped in the "Killing School Life", where Makoto used his skills to keep his classmates, and later the world, from falling into despair.

He is voiced by Megumi Ogata in Japanese (who also voiced Yami Yugi in Yu-Gi-Oh) and Bryce Papenbrook in English. In the stage plays, he was played by Kanata Hongō for the ones adapting the first Danganronpa.

Actions and Characteristics[]

  • He's one of the most noble and incorruptible characters in the entire series as he lacks any real corrupting qualities at all. For starters, he is forgiving towards others even if they're guilty of a deed as immoral as murder, as shown following the deaths of Sayaka and Leon, where he swore to not let their deaths be forgotten and to expose the mastermind of the killing game to avenge them, and when he forgave Aoi after Monokuma manipulated her into trying to get everyone, herself included, killed. Even to the point where he's willing to save Junko Enoshima from executing herself once her plan falls apart. Something that later helps him redeem Kyosuke Munakata when he was after Makoto with the intent of killing him.
  • While his willingness to be guided by his feelings and cemented trust in others makes him rather naive, it also gives him an unbreakable sense of loyalty. He demonstrates this when he's given an opportunity to expose Kyoko's supposed lie but refused because of how much he trusted her and how much she supported and believed in him throughout the killing game, even though the other option would be him getting accused as the culprit and executed.
  • He has a sense of hope unique to almost every other character in the series. Which he demonstrates when Junko Enoshima revealed the truth about what had became of the outside world, but Makoto still refused to fall into despair and used his hope to pull the other survivors out of their despair and win against Junko.
  • He's compassionate and willing to always find the good in others. For example, when the remnants of despair were captured, Makoto protected them and placed them in the Neo World Program to undo Junko's influence on them, even knowing the immense trouble he could get into with the rest of the Future Foundation by doing so.
  • Overall, his heroic actions are the ones that have the most influence on the franchise. As he played a large part in The Tragedy being undone thanks to defeating its instigator, Junko Enoshima, and restoring the Remnants of Despair back to their old selves.
