John Coffey is the deuteragonist of the 1996 Stephen King book The Green Mile and its 1999 film adaption. He is a wrongfully convicted death row inmate who possesses special healing abilities which he uses to help everyone in the Cold Mountain Penitentiary.

He was portrayed by the late Michael Clarke Duncan.

Actions and Characteristics[]

  • He is shown to be kind and cooperative with the prison staff and inmates, warning Paul Edgecomb about Wild Bill and sharing his cornbread with the other inmates (except Wild Bill who did not deserve it). While it's true he is nihilistic, he is neither cynical nor misanthropic.
  • He is incredibly powerful as he can heal others from diseases and even reverse death, as shown when he revived Mr. Jingles after Percy stepped on him. He's also extremely large, being at least 6 feet 8 inches feet tall and weighing 400 lbs, giving him superhuman strength.
  • He has a strong influence in the film as he attempted to heal the two Detterick girls and when he failed, ended up on death row, allowing him to heal Paul Edgecomb from his urinary tract infection, revive Mr. Jingles, cured Melinda's brain tumor when the guards smuggled him out of prison, and punished both Percy and Wild Bill.
