I never told you about what happened with Boo. The fear in her eyes when she was scared. I... I didn't like what I saw. What I saw in me. Laugh power is the heart of the new Monsters Inc. And it's also the right thing to do.
~ Sullivan explaining why they don't use Scream Energy anymore.

James P. Sullivan is one of the two main protagonists (alongside Mike Wazowski) of the Monsters, Inc franchise, he serves as the main protagonist of Monsters, Inc. The deuteragonist of Monsters University and one of two overarching protagonists of Monsters at Work.

He is a large, bear like monster who, after accidentally letting a human child into the Monster World, would go on an adventure where he would discover the adverse effects it has on children, and, after inheriting Monsters, Inc from the recently exposed Waternoose, went on to change the power source from kid's screams to kid's laughs.

He was voiced by John Goodman.

Actions and Characteristics[]

  • He is by far, the kindest and most noble character in the entire franchise, with him being the only character who is nice all the monsters he interacts with. While he started off as an arrogant and cocky jerk, he subverts these corrupting traits over time.
  • He is incredibly admirable for preventing Randall and Henry Waternoose from torturing several children with the scream extractor, solving the energy crisis in the monsters world and making Monsters Incorporated a company that involved making children laugh rather then scaring them, both producing a better method for creating energy in the monster world and stopping any children from being traumatized at the same time.
  • Due to him being the new CEO of Monsters, Inc. and being incredibly strong, being able to carry all of Oozma Kappa barring Mike without getting tired or giving up, effortlessly fight Randall with no issue and rip a metal pipe off a wall and bend it with ease, which requires at least 35,000 tons of force to do effortlessly, he is the most powerful character in the series, with Mike Wazowski falling short in strength.
  • He has tons of influence over the entire franchise, as he not only played a role in defeating both Henry J. Waternoose and Randall Boggs, but he also was the one who decided to change Scream Energy to Laugh Energy, giving him influence over the entirety of Monsters at Work plotline.
    • He was also the one to motivate Tyler Tuskmon, the main protagonist of that series to keep going and to become a jokester as well as recommending him for the job at Monsters, Inc, which only adds to his influence.
